Preschooler in Normal left on school bus

NORMAL -- How does a preschooler end up left alone on parked school bus for 30 minutes?

That's what officials want to know after an employee at a transportation garage in Normal found a boy on a bus.

He apparently got on to attend afternoon classes Wednesday. But he didn't get off the bus at school.

District superintendent Gary Niehaus said Thursday that the incident's "completely unacceptable." And he assures parents steps will be taken ensure it won't happen again. Niehaus also apologized to the boy's family.

A driver and monitor have been suspended pending an investigation.

Niehaus says drivers and monitors are supposed to check buses to make sure nobody's left behind. He says proper procedures weren't followed.

The district didn't release the boy's name or exact age.
