Fish Fry returns to West Dundee

It's back!

The Friday Fish Fry has returned to the West Dundee Veterans of Foreign Wars Post at 117 S. First St., from now through May.

With a menu that has a little something of everything, the Fish Fry is sure to be a family favorite.

The fish fry is served every Friday from 5 to 9 p.m.

There are chicken fingers, hot dogs and hamburgers for those with an aversion to seafood. Sandwiches, deep fried jumbo shrimp and scallops are also available.

But the signature items on the menu, the beer battered fish fry, beer battered whole catfish, baked fish and the seafood platter - chock full of fish, shrimp and scallops - have my stomach growling as I write this column just before lunch and hours after I ate breakfast.

If you do go down to the VFW, which is located across the street from the Ace Hardware, don't forget your side items. There's a choice of a roll, potatoes and slaw. Then there's the appetizer menu: homemade clam chowder, and a trio of deep friend items - onion rings, mushrooms and mozzarella sticks.

For those who can't stay, carry out orders are available by calling (847) 428-9006.

Meal prices range from $9 to $11; sandwiches are $5 to $7 and appetizers are $2.75 to $5.

Shop with a Cop: The program that benefits local underprivileged children each holiday season is under way for the 2008 season. This year, sponsors can donate money to the police departments involved - Carpentersville, East and West Dundee, Gilberts and Sleepy Hollow.

There are other ways to contribute. Each of the aforementioned police departments has gifts for purchase with proceeds helping a child buy presents for themselves and loved ones this Christmas. Conversely, the gifts can be donated to one of the children.

Sparky the Puppy can be purchased for $16.99 at any of the participating departments. The cute and cuddly stuffed animal is sure to please.

Avon has also teamed up with Shop with a Cop. Proceeds from purchases will go to the Shop with a Cop Fund.

Also, at the beginning of November, laser engraved wooden holiday ornaments are available, as well as "Magic Reindeer Food" cards. The cards come with a pouch of glitter and oats to sprinkle on the lawn to help Santa finds his way to your house.

At Raceway Woods: The celebrations for the Meadowdale International Raceway's 50th anniversary also continue today at Raceway Woods in Carpentersville. The anniversary marks the date that the raceway opened in 1958.

In its heyday, the track hosted national championships in sports car racing, stock cars, motorcycles, go-karts and snowmobiles in the winter months.

Gates open at 10 a.m. today. Admission is free. There will be video presentations of Meadowdale races and live music until 6 p.m. when the festival closes.

Former drivers and officials who helped make Meadowdale a premier racing destination will be on hand to share stories and memories of the raceway.
