Offense flops against Burnett
In Game 1 of Tuesday's day-night doubleheader against the Blue Jays, White Sox hitters knew they'd have to be locked in to have a shot against Toronto starter A.J. Burnett.
"He's good," said Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski. "I mean, 95 (mph fastball) with an 85-mph curveball that falls off the table. He doesn't get the money and fame and accolades he's got in his career if he's not any good."
Burnett was good in the Jays' 3-1 win over the White Sox in Game 1. The right-hander worked 7 innings and allowed just 1 run on 1 hit. Burnett had a no-hitter until Orlando Cabrera led off the sixth inning with a single.
Despite the dominant outing, the Sox had plenty of chances thanks to 3 errors and 4 total walks from Burnett and two relief pitchers.
But the White Sox were 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position, and Pierzynski, Juan Uribe and Alexei Ramirez all failed to put down sacrifice bunts.
No wonder angry Sox manager Ozzie Guillen declined to talk to the media after the game.
"It's frustrating," Pierzynski said. "We didn't have a whole lot of opportunities, and when we did, we weren't able to take advantage of them."
Wrist watch: Carlos Quentin is expected to miss 2-3 weeks after having a pin inserted into his fractured right wrist Monday.
"I've explored different ways of trying to heal faster," Quentin said Tuesday.
Unless the Sox hold it together and make the playoffs, manager Ozzie Guillen isn't expecting to see Quentin back in the field this season.
"When they take the pin out, he's going to have to take a few days to recover, take (batting practice)," Guillen said. "It's not a thing where it starts clicking and then you go play. It's going to take a little while. Hopefully, if we make it to the playoffs then we can count on him then."
Infielder Chris Getz, who was called up from Class AAA Charlotte on Sept. 2, is out for the season with a fractured left wrist.
Getz twice served as a pinch runner with the Sox since coming up from Charlotte, but after being hit on the wrist by a pitch from Durham's Wade Davis on Aug. 31, the pain never subsided.
Getz had an X-ray after getting hit, and he had another X-ray Monday.
"If it's a bruise or even a bone bruise, it gets better each day," Getz said. "I knew something wasn't right."
White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen wasn't happy to hear the news about Getz.
"I think they took the wrong X-rays (at Charlotte) and they came out negative," Guillen said. "All of a sudden it's still bothering him, and the doctor in Chicago said there's a double fracture. It's a bad news, but we've got to make the best of it."
Around the horn: Javier Vazquez started Game 1 and took the loss after allowing 2 runs on 5 hits in 6 innings. Vazquez was unavailable for comment afterward. He left to be with his mother-in-law, who fainted during the game. ... Alexei Ramirez was voted AL Rookie of the Month after batting .308 in August with 6 homers and 22 RBI.
