Charges dropped in double slaying
Prosecutors have dropped all charges against a man arrested in last month's killing of an off-duty Chicago police officer and a woman, who were gunned down as they sat in a parked SUV.
At Wednesday's hearing in Cook County Circuit Court, 26-year-old Jason Austin was ordered released from custody.
Austin was arrested on murder charges days after Detective Robert Soto and Kathryn Romberg were fatally shot on Chicago's West Side.
At the time, police said that before Soto died he described the gunman's car. They said Austin has a car matching that description.
They also said witnesses placed Austin at the crime scene.
Prosecutors wouldn't say why charges were dropped, but they say charges could be filed again.
