$425,000 for the troops

Operation Support Our Troops Illinois recently raised $425,000 during its annual Rockin' for the Troops benefit concert. More than 12,000 people attended the event that featured Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band, American English, Tom Dreesen and Dick Biondi. Proceeds will help fund postage for gift packages shipped to troops overseas.

Healthy Living fair in Batavia

The Batavia High School Health Living Expo opens to the public from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 21, with keynote speaker Danielle Hollar of the Agatston Research Foundation, at the school, 1200 W. Wilson St. There will be exhibits on health care, exercise, nutrition and stress management. Admission is free. Students will participate in the expo during the school day. Hollar is research director at Agatston, which has a mission of improving the nation's heart health. She is the principal investigator of the Healthier Options for Public School children study. Batavia public schools are using HOPS curriculum and programs in the elementary schools,

Kane County assessments supervisor Mark Armstrong and his staff have developed a presentation explaining property taxes and how property value is assessed, and Armstrong is ready to take it on the road to any group that wants to learn.

Batavia to update its zoning laws

The City of Batavia Plan Commission will conduct a community input session regarding the city's update to its zoning regulations, at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 17 in the city council chambers of the Batavia Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave. The zoning regulations, a set of conditions, limitations, and allowances establishing how one can and cannot use or build on property. This includes the basic use (residential, commercial, industrial) and building bulk (structure height, size, setbacks).
