15-year-old charged with dumping baby

A 15-year-old Chicago girl has been charged with wrapping her newborn baby in a plastic bag and abandoning the infant in an apartment courtyard.

Police said Sunday that they filed attempted murder and aggravated battery charges against the girl in connection with the July 8th incident in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood.

Authorities say a neighbor heard the baby's muffled crying and found the injured newborn wrapped in a plastic grocery bag. The neighbor took the baby to a nearby Chicago fire station for treatment. Police say the 2-month-old infant is still under treatment at a local hospital.

Chicago police say one of their detectives traced the case to the young mother.
