Tauchman leads Fremd past Hersey

Senior quarterback Mike Tauchman's big game led Fremd to a 48-14 victory over host Hersey on Friday night in a Mid-Suburban League crossover football game.

Tauchman had 170 yards and 2 touchdowns passing and added another 93 yards and 2 more scores on the ground. After the game he deflected the credit to his teammates.

"I can't throw touchdown passes unless I have great receivers, and I can't run for them unless I have a good offensive line," Tauchman said.

One of Tauchman's favorite targets was senior wide receiver Andrew Corso, who had 5 catches for 101 yards and a touchdown against the Huskies (0-2).

Fremd (1-1) coach Mike Donatucci was happy to get a win but knows his team still has a lot of work to do this season.

"We did a lot of good things (offensively) but we've still got some way to go, and I think the kids understand that," Donatucci said. "It's nice to have a win and we'll just kind of start again tomorrow."

Interestingly enough, Tauchman did not even start at quarterback in the game. Fellow senior John Kent took the snaps during Fremd's first offensive series, on which the Vikings punted after 3 plays.

"We felt that our lineman weren't being aggressive enough up front. We said we were going to start (with the quarterback) under center and run the ball," Donatucci said. "But that went to the wayside."

The Vikings had a 35-0 lead at the half, but were outscored 14-13 from there, which is something Hersey coach Mark Gunther said he was proud about.

"The kids could have rolled over and died and waited for this thing to end, but we made adjustments at halftime and with clear heads, they picked it up and executed," Gunther said. "That (the second half) was good. That's a building block for us, certainly for the next game and for the rest of the season."

Quarterback Steve Nelson led the way for the Huskies, completing 8-of-21 passes for 141 yards and 2 touchdowns, both of which went to wide receiver Kyle Mengarelli.
