Crede could be lost for the season

White Sox left fielder Carlos Quentin could miss the rest of the season with a fractured right wrist, and third baseman Joe Crede could be gone for the year as well.

Crede came out of Tuesday night's game at Cleveland with tightness in his lower back, the same injury that forced him on to the disabled list from July 25-Aug. 24.

Sox manager Ozzie Guillen snapped when asked for a Crede update before Friday night's game against the Angels.

"I'm not going to count (on) Crede for a long time," Guillen said. "He's going to have a second opinion on his back. I don't expect him to be back anytime soon. I have be honest with you because I'm tired of people asking me the same question about Joe. Joe is not going to be with us, and I don't expect him to be back in the season."

Crede, who had back surgery in June of 2007, batted just .174 (4-for-23) after coming off the DL in late August.

"I tip my hat to Joe Crede," Guillen said. "He was playing with a lot of pain and we could see him playing with pain. We could see the way he was moving. He couldn't take anymore. He did everything in his power to help this ballclub, and unfortunately that happened."

On the move: With Carlos Quentin on the shelf, Nick Swisher started in left field against the Angels.

The versatile Swisher usually plays center field or first base, and he can also play right field.

"I'm excited, because it's a shorter run," Swisher said of the move to left. "I'll just go out and take some extra flyballs to see the angle, the trajectory off the bat. I'll just go out there and work a little harder. Whatever spot I'm at, I'll go out there and do my best."

Griffey's back: There was some good news on the injury front Friday - Ken Griffey Jr. started in center field after sitting out three straight games at Cleveland with lower back stiffness.

Ozzie Guillen said he isn't expecting Griffey to step up now that Carlos Quentin is sidelined.

"He's going to get his day off here and there," Guillen said. "I don't expect him to carry the load. With the September call-ups, I have a couple of guys I like. (Dewayne) Wise and (Jerry) Owens are out there. Brian (Anderson's) playing pretty good every time he plays out there. I think we have the people there."

Wise (strained left adductor) was reinstated from the disabled list Friday.
