Chicago doctor charged in Pa. turnpike death

WEXFORD, Pa. _ A Chicago doctor has been charged with homicide and hit-and-run after he struck and killed a motorcyclist on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, police said.

Dr. Shiva Lal Acharya, 35, hit the motorcycle from behind, then fled his BMW on foot into woods along the roadway about 4:10 a.m. Thursday, according to Pennsylvania State Police. Troopers found him hiding in the woods shortly after 8 a.m.

Before Acharya crossed the state line into Pennsylvania, authorities said Ohio police had been trying to stop him for going 76 mph in a 65 mph zone. Police say he reached speeds of 130 mph.

Acharya had been on his way to a job interview in Easton, police said. He was charged with homicide, hit and run, leaving the scene of an accident and other traffic violations.

The motorcyclist was identified as Keith A. Brown, 46, of Green Bay, Wis.
