Broncos regroup, handle Warren

What was a slow start for Barrington boys soccer has quickly turned around in a in less than a week.

Ata Ozbay and Ryan Mangone played a big part, as each scored a pair and led the Broncos past Warren 5-1 in the opener of the Barrington Classic Tournament on Tuesday.

It also was the Broncos' first time on the school's new artificial turf and it's second straight win after opening the season with losses to New Trier and Hersey.

"Ata (Ozbay) and Ryan (Mangone) are pretty good attacking players," Barrington coach Scott Steib said. "Both are fast and I believe the turf will make them even faster.

"That really wasn't a bad Warren team. This team (Warren) is in range to Hersey and us. We could play them ten times and we might not beat them five or six times. We just got in and finished our chances."

Barrington (2-2), the reigning Class AA state champion, showed its strength and scored four times in an eight-minute span in the first half.

"We're capable to have that big explosion, but we haven't had it," Barrington coach Scott Steib said. "We're still trying to find ourselves."

Mangone, a senior, got the first 2 goals scored on the new field for the Broncos.

Mangone scored on a breakaway in the 26th minute taking a Ozbay through ball and knocking a shot off the far post.

Then Mangone added another three-minutes later talking the ball away from the Warren defense for a 2-0 Broncos lead.

"Putting two in quickly gave us the big boost we needed," Mangone said. "Ata (Ozbay) gave me a nice flick (on the first goal). I don't know how but both (Warren defenders) came at me. On one touch, I was able to get free and nobody was near me. I was able to finish it easily. I was a little lucky to get it off the post."

Ozbay knocked in his first from a Mangone assist 40 seconds later and Ozbay added one other in the 34th minute off a free kick.

Barrington's Noel Irion made it 5-0 in the 45th minute off a pass from Frank Ingraffia.

Warren (1-3, 0-1) got its goal from Jarrett Jesperson in the 57th minute.

"I expected it to be a closer game," Warren coach Jason Ahonen said. "We did play better in the second half. The boys are frustrated. We've taken one step forward and two steps back right now. We're playing good teams and we're a good team. It's a matter of time before we figure things out."

In other games, Lake Zurich tied St. Charles North 1-1, Marmion topped Wheaton Warrenville South 2-1 and Rockford Boylan edged Evanston 3-2.
