Not much to do for Sox call-ups

CLEVELAND - The jury is still out on the overall quality, but the White Sox did add some quantity Monday, when 25-man rosters were allowed to expand.

The Sox recalled relief pitchers Ehren Wasserman and Mike MacDougal and outfielder Jerry Owens from Class AAA Charlotte and also purchased the contract of catcher Paul Phillips from their top farm club.

Today, the White Sox are expected to bring back infielder Chris Getz, third baseman Josh Fields and pitcher Lance Broadway from Charlotte.

Wasserman and MacDougal pitched in Monday's loss to the Indians. So did Boone Logan, who returned from Triple-A on Sunday.

Manager Ozzie Guillen said it's going to be difficult to get Owens, Getz and Fields off the bench.

"I don't have any playing time for them, not in my book," Guillen said. "I don't have plans to start any of those guys. Hopefully we take a little lead out there and that gives me a chance to play them. They have to be ready to pinch run, pinch hit."

Griffey scratched: Center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. was pulled from the starting lineup just before Monday's game with a sore lower back.

"It just tightened up a little bit when I was sitting," Griffey said. "We'll see how it feels in the morning."

Remember me? At the start of the season, Mike MacDougal was viewed as a key relief pitcher for the Sox.

But after allowing 15 baserunners in 8 innings, the lanky right-hander was demoted to Charlotte.

MacDougal rejoined the White Sox on Monday and pitched 1 scoreless inning against Cleveland. He was 0-4 with a 3.83 ERA in 38 games for Charlotte.

"No, not really," MacDougal said when asked if he ever wondered about returning. "I was just down there playing baseball. I just worked on a couple things. I tried to get a little more consistent with my sinker and worked on my cutter, tried to get it where I could throw it a little harder."

Rocky roads: Much has been made about the Minnesota Twins' 14-game road trip, which ends after a three-game series at Toronto.

The Sox are wrapping up a 10-game road swing to Baltimore, Boston and Cleveland. Before playing their regularly scheduled game last Monday, the Sox and Orioles completed a suspended game.

"They (Twins) go for 14, we go for 10," Guillen said. "A lot of people talk about they're away for that long, but so are we."
