Two major issues left unmentioned

Your uninspiring open letter to Barack Obama in the Thursday edition of the Daily Herald raised a number of obvious questions and ended with a somewhat nebulous call to action.

Unfortunately, it failed to raise two issues that must be brought into the public debate if we're to avoid an untimely end to the United States as we now know it.

One relates to the explosive growth in our national debt where we are mortgaging our future; yet no politician of either party is talking about controlling federal spending. This deserves direct attention.

The other relates to the failure of our government to deal with investment in roads, railroads, water systems and other infrastructure that's needed to support growth and keep the U.S. competitive.

Our own battle with the Canadian National Railway here in Barrington reflects this failure.

Both these issues require decisions on what we will and will not do, as well as the political will to do the right thing.

Until our leaders are forced to acknowledge this, we'll be left with them pandering to our personal needs and using our money to pay for it.
