Geneva ACT scores improve
Geneva High School's 2008 graduates achieved an average composite score of 23.9 on the ACT, according to numbers released this month by ACT. This is higher than the Class of 2007's 23, and the 20.7 state average and 21.1 national average. This is a 0.9 percentage point increase from the 23.0 average recorded among 2007 graduating seniors. This is also significantly higher than the 20.7 state average and 21.1 national average. The ACT is a college-readiness exam given to every Illinois high school student, regardless of post-high school plans. The ACT tests students in English, math, reading, and science.
Mighty Viking race
The Geneva Academic Foundation will host its fourth annual Mighty Viking Boat Race during the Festival of the Vine from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 13 at Island Park. Thousands of miniature boats will be released into the Fox River from the State Street Bridge. Festivities will include games, music, food and raffles, Raffle prizes include a 42-inch plasma HDTV and a pair of diamond earrings. Local bands The Sketches Trio and Waiting for Yesterday will perform. The silent auction will again include the "Sleigh Ride With Santa," an item that can only be obtained at this event. St. Charles Township brush pickup
St. Charles Township brush pickup dates are Sept. 2, Sept. 22, Oct. 14 and Nov. 3. Unincorporated St. Charles residents should call the township road district office at (630) 584-3496 the Friday before each pickup and leave their address if they have brush to be picked up.
Raising funds to pay for the roof
Multiple garage sales will be held Sept. 5 and 6 to help raise money to cover the cost of a renovated roof for the Congregational Church of Batavia. The church recently completed costly repairs and renovations to the ceiling and roof of the 162-year-old sanctuary. Garages sales will be held at five Batavia locations: 1316 Spencer Lane, 621 Tuggles Court, 1125 Morton St., 1216 Danforth St. and 515 Roberts Lane (Saturday only). Other sales will be held at 601 South St. in Geneva, 522 Bede Circle in North Aurora and 613 Birch St. in Sugar Grove. To make a donation and for information, call the church at (630) 879-1999.
Hear mystery author
J.A. Konrath, author of the Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels mysteries, will be the speaker at the DuPage Library System scholarship dinner and auction at 6 p.m. Sept. 19 at The Carlisle, 435 E. Butterfield Road, in Lombard.Proceeds will support scholarships to individuals pursuing library education. A silent auction of member-donated gift baskets will be held. Tickets are $45 per person. Kane County assessments supervisor Mark Armstrong and his staff have developed a presentation explaining property taxes and how property value is assessed, and Armstrong is ready to take it on the road to any group that wants to learn.
"Fiction vs. Fact About Property Tax Assessments" is also available on the county Web site, at www.co.kane.il.us/soa/presentation.htm. Armstrong showed the presentation to the county board committee of the whole Tuesday. It discusses seven beliefs about property taxes.
