Kaneland cruises behind Garcia's 2 early goals

Kaneland finally started clicking on all cylinders. For Hampshire, it was another step in the process.

Those were the differing takes on Kaneland's 6-1 victory against Hampshire in the Burlington Central tournament Saturday. Genaro Garcia scored twice in the first half to lead the Knights (2-0-1).

"We needed this," said Kaneland coach Scott Parillo. "Our first 2 games, we played pretty lackluster against some teams that we should have beaten easily. We would dominate 95 percent of the game, but mental lapses would kill us.

"That's just inexperience. We graduated 13 guys from last year's squad. So this was a good game for us. We were able to shut them down a little bit. We started off slow. Our passing was awful early on. I think once we got that goal, we started clicking."

The Knights got on the board first when Santiago Tovar converted a penalty kick 15 minutes in. Garcia added 2 more goals in the first half, the second one coming just seconds before intermission.

Kaneland continued to build the lead in the second half, with Nick Williams, Kevin Szatkowski and starting goalkeeper Chris Ott adding scores. Andrew Obmalay scored for Hampshire (0-2) with about 15 minutes left. It was the Whip-Purs' first goal of the season.

Hampshire coach John Gosling is taking a long-term approach with his young squad. The Whips have just 3 seniors, but 9 freshmen and sophomores on the roster.

"We're building for the future," said Gosling. "We can't care about what's going on up on the scoreboard. But you have to care about what's going on out on the field."

Nathan Sorg was in the net for Hampshire.
