Jacobs wins in 3 OTs

Friday night's 31-30 season-opening victory at Moline marked a number of firsts for Jacobs head coach Dean Schlueter.

Of course it was his first win of the 2008 campaign.

It was also the first time his team has gone into a triple overtime.

Lastly, it was the first time he's ever won a game 'this way.'

By this way, Schlueter is referring to the difference in the nonconference meeting, a failed extra point in by Moline in the final overtime.

Jacobs struck first when Alec Starr connected with Adam Bybeck for a 15-yard touchdown. Collin Carter added the extra point. The Golden Eagles would take a 14-7 lead into the second half following a 47-yard Chris Zaio interception return (Carter kick).

Moline battled back and a scoreless fourth quarter would lead to overtime.

Bybeck scored his second touchdown on a 6-yard run and a Carter extra point put Jacobs up 21-14, but before the conclusion, Josh Anders of Moline found the end zone.

Overtime No. 2 rendered single field goals from each team, Carter splitting the uprights from 32 yards out for the Golden Eagles.

Bybeck scored the final Jacobs touchdown on a 1-yard run and Carter connected to conclude his night perfectly. Both his kicks were just over the crossbar.

"This just goes to show you that you never know," said Schlueter. "This proved its really a game of inches."
