One injured in Elgin drive-by

A 21-year-old Elgin man was shot in the foot or lower leg in a likely gang-related drive-by attack Friday afternoon on the city's near east side, police said.

Elgin police received an emergency call at 3:35 p.m. for a man who was shot in the 100 block of North Gifford Street between Division and Park streets.

Elgin Lt. Sean Rafferty said authorities believe the attacker probably fired multiple shots from a passing vehicle.

The victim did not return fire, and his family drove him to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, he said. No one else was hurt.

"It's under investigation as possibly gang motivated," said Rafferty, who declined to answer whether the victim was a known or affiliated gang member.

Elgin police, in a statement, said they would release more information "as it becomes available."

People who may have information about the shooting should call (847) 289-2700.
