Woman shot in Round Lake Beach drive-by
A 62-year-old Round Lake Beach woman suffered a gunshot wound to her leg in a drive-by shooting, police said.
Round Lake Beach police Deputy Chief Rich Chiarello said the woman was not believed to be the intended target, and that the shooter fired into a "crowd of people" gathered on the corner of Brier Lane and E. Clarendon Drive about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Chiarello said police and rescue personnel responded, and saw the unnamed female on the ground with a gunshot wound to her leg. The victim was taken to Centegra Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry where she was treated and released.
"The bullet was a through and through shot, meaning it went through the leg," he said.
Witnesses at the scene gave a description of an individual believed to be involved in the shooting, Chiarello said. Officers interviewed the person and collected evidence at the scene, he added.
"We are currently interviewing and investigating all angles of this case," he said. "We do not believe this was a random shooting, and that the shooter knew the group."
He added police continue to interview witnesses and are trying to verify previous statements made to police Tuesday. Investigators plan to turn over evidence to the Lake County State's Attorneys Office by Friday afternoon.
Anyone with information should contact the Round Lake Beach Police Department at (847) 546-2127, he said.
