Hoffman village hall renovation coming together

Dangling wires and unfinished walls will greet residents walking through Hoffman Estates village hall this week.

Work crews, however, are expected to complete much of the renovation work for the first floor by next week. That includes new offices for Village Clerk Bev Romanoff and for the health and human services department.

The building at 1900 Hassell Road has been transformed over the summer, as department offices have been shifted to temporary quarters while workers knock down walls and put in new doors and windows. The second floor, which includes the mayor's and village manager's offices, was finished earlier this summer.

Work still waiting for completion includes a new spiral staircase going from the first to second floor.

The board room renovations have been repeatedly delayed, as construction companies found difficulty in finding the correct pews for the project. Village officials even agreed to meet only twice a month over the summer, opposed to the regular weekly schedule to allow construction crews increased access to the board room.

The new plan for the board room is to wait until the multipurpose room is completed, allowing trustees to move meetings on site while the board room undergoes construction, Romanoff said.

The multipurpose room is where the former cafeteria was located. The board room work is scheduled for completion later this year.

The $6.25 million for the village hall work was approved in February, with the money coming from two bond issues totaling $54.9 million. That money will also pay for the land and construction of a new police station, a new fire station and a water tank.

The new $32 million police station is scheduled to open in August 2010 at 401 W. Higgins Road. Work on the new $6.5 million replacement fire station started earlier this month west of Beverly Road near I-90. Firefighters could be moved in around Memorial Day, 2009.
