Completing a game from four months ago, Sox fall to Orioles
BALTIMORE - After posting a strange win against Tampa Bay the day before thanks to some unorthodox base running by catcher A.J. Pierzynski, the White Sox were tagged with an odd loss to the Orioles on Monday at Camden Yards.
Resuming an April 28 game that was played at U.S. Cellular Field and suspended due to bad weather with the score tied at 3-3 after 11 innings, the Sox wound up losing to Baltimore 4-3 in 14.
"Everything was weird," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "I tried to bunt to tie the game when I was on the visitor's side. I've never seen anything like that, and hopefully we never see it again. Especially when you lose a game. You wait this long and you think about this game, and all of a sudden you lose this game."
Guillen wanted to "start" Matt Thornton on Monday, but the hard-throwing lefty pitched against the Rays on Friday and Saturday, so another reliever, Horacio Ramirez, got the nod.
Ramirez held the Orioles down in the 12th and 13th innings, but Baltimore loaded the bases against the left-hander with one out in the 14th and D.J. Carrasco came on in relief.
Lou Montanez greeted Carrasco with a run-scoring single to finally decide the outcome.
The White Sox did rally in the bottom of the 14th inning when Paul Konerko drew a leadoff walk against Rocky Cherry, but Pierzynski twice failed to get a sacrifice bunt down before striking out.
Carlos Quentin followed with a single, and pinch-hitter Ken Griffey Jr. was intentionally walked with two outs to load the bases.
Jermaine Dye, who pinch-hit for Juan Uribe, popped out to end the game.
"We hit a couple balls hard and they made good plays," Guillen said. "Everything went fine until the last inning. All of a sudden, we didn't bunt the ball late in the game and that was a key, too."
It was a forgettable game for Pierzynski, who was a combined 0-for-7 while stranding seven base runners.
