Man charged with fatal beating of 5-month-old son

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) _ A 23-year-old Illinois man is being held without bond in an Indiana jail in the death of his 5-month-old son.

Ryne White of Monee (moh-NEE'), Illinois, faces charges of murder, neglect of a dependent, battery and possession of marijuana in Indiana's Lake County.

The Lake County Coroner says an autopsy on Friday showed Ryne White Jr. died of multiple skull fractures from blunt force trauma. The baby also had swelling and bruising around the mouth.

According to an affidavit, the boy's father told Gary police he left the baby in the kitchen sink to check on another child who was crying upstairs and when he came back the baby was underwater.

He also said he had dropped the baby, the infant had fallen off the couch, and that another child had hit the baby with a shoe.
