Legislation to aid victimized women
Congressman Mark Kirk should be commended for his willingness to stand up for victimized women.
In 2007, Congressman Kirk co-sponsored the "Compassionate Assistance for Rape Emergencies Act."
The bill would require hospitals receiving federal Medicaid funds to provide emergency contraception services for women who have been raped.
The bill requires hospitals to provide women with accurate and unbiased information about emergency contraception options, provide such contraception at the hospital on their request and not deny any such services because of the inability of a woman or her family to pay.
In my view, this shouldn't even be an issue. I am glad Kirk is in Congress to ensure that the right thing is done for women in these dire circumstances.
