Elderly landlord burned by former tenant dies

Authorities say a 77-year-old Chicago landlord who was doused with a flammable liquid and set on fire by a former tenant has died.

Officials say Harlan Hayes died early Sunday at an area hospital. Hayes owned an apartment building in Chicago's South side Woodlawn neighborhood.

Police have arrested 28-year-old Donald Hardy of Chicago. Hardy had been charged with attempted first-degree murder. Family members say Hayes had burns over 90 percent of his body.

A tenant says she called 911 early Tuesday morning when she saw Hayes walking down the sidewalk, naked and badly burned. He collapsed on the porch of the building next door.
