A scenario that leads to fascism
A letter in the Aug. 22 Daily Herald proposes a scenario that would lead us to a socialist economy.
Apparently, the letter was in response to mine in the Aug. 16 Daily Herald.
The writer of the former conveniently ignores the fact that we already have many socialist programs in place such as government subsidies and tax breaks to private industries, Social Security and Medicare.
The opposite of socialism is fascism, which is government and corporate control of all goods and services.
I could propose a counter-scenario to the one in the Aug. 22 letter where conservatives with a conservative president and large conservative majorities in Congress and the Supreme Court could conceivably lead us on the path to fascism.
The Scandinavian countries all have socialist economies and are as prosperous, and in some cases more prosperous, than we are.
