Downstate teachers accused of ignoring abuse
URBANA -- Three former Urbana school officials have pleaded not guilty to failing to report child abuse by a teacher.
Former Superintendent Gene Amberg, former principal Janice Bradley and former human resources director Carmelita Thomas entered their pleas Friday in Champaign County Circuit Court.
Amberg and Thomas are each charged with a misdemeanor count of failing to make a mandated report. Bradley is charged with two counts.
All school employees are required to report any known or suspected child abuse or neglect to the Department of Children and Family Services.
The teacher, Jon Andrew White, is serving a 60-year prison term after admitting he sexually abused young girls in Urbana and Normal schools.
