Fish boil tonight in Des Plaines

While there will be no River Days celebration this year in Des Plaines, there will be plenty of opportunities to celebrate the Des Plaines River.

Today is the fish boil. The annual Door County Fish Boil will be held today with fish provided by Don's Dock of Des Plaines.

Seatings are scheduled for 5 p.m., 5:45 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. on the lawn of the Kinder House (weather permitting), 789 Pearson St.

The dinner costs $16 for Historical Society members, or $18 for nonmembers. It will cost $9 for children under 12, or $10 for nonmembers.

Reservations required. Call the History Center at (847) 391-5399.

You also can see the historical figures of Des Plaines come alive.

Socrates Rand, one of the city's first permanent settlers, as well as midwife Grandma Ahbe and Civil War veteran Peter Reiter are all part of the upcoming musical theater presentation, "Tales of the River," an original production based on the "Spoon River Anthology."

The Des Plaines Historical Society commissioned the presentation in 2003. Written by Daniel Scott with original music composed by lifelong Des Plaines resident Tim Vana, performances will be held Saturday and Sunday.

"Tales of the River," will be held at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. each day in the dining hall of the Des Plaines Methodist Campground, 1900 E. Algonquin Road.

Tickets are $5 with a special price of $4 for groups of 10 or more. Call (847) 391-5399 or visit the History Center, 781 Pearson St. Reservations required.

Veterans round-table today: A veterans round-table discussion today in Des Plaines will feature state Sen. Dan Kotowski and Kathleen Prunty of Alexian Brothers Medical Center. They will present a new program available to help those with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. at Frisbie Senior Center, 52 E. Northwest Highway in Des Plaines. Coffee will be available at 9:30 a.m. Mike Sweeney, Republican, is challenging Kotowski.

Pioneer Day: It's just about time to celebrate Elk Grove Village's Pioneer Day. On Sept. 14, the event will run from noon to 4 p.m. at the Schuette-Bierman Farmhouse Campus, 399 Biesterfield Road in Elk Grove Village.

Have the shape of your head studied by a Victorian phrenologist or build a scarecrow with the Elk Grove Garden Club. Other activities include an art show, the art of historical crafts, panning for gold, enjoying a petting zoo and watching a magician using tricks from the Civil War era. You can also hobnob with an Abraham Lincoln re-enactor.

The Pioneer Day is presented by the Elk Grove Park District and the Elk Grove Historical Society. Admission is free. There is a small fee to make the scarecrows. The Schuette-Bierman Farmhouse is part of the Elk Grove Park District. Call (847) 439-3994.
