Carpentersville pair busted for filing false robbery report
Carpentersville police say the man and woman they arrested Thursday weren't the victims of an armed robbery but rather were involved in a drug deal that went sour.
Sametio J. Edgar, 19 and Maria A. Fernandez, 21, both of 3010 Wakefield Drive, Apt. F, were charged with disorderly conduct for filing a false police report, police said.
In addition, Edgar was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and possession of marijuana, police said.
On Aug. 17, the couple stated in a police report their car was on Hazard Road near Wren Road at 5 a.m. when they were blocked by another car stretched across the road. Two men ran up to their car, one carrying a handgun. Fernandez told police one of the men hit her in the head with his hand, stole her cell phone and ripped a necklace from her neck.
The couple identified the two men from a photo lineup, warrants were issued for their arrests and one of them was arrested Wednesday.
When the arrested man was taken to the Carpentersville lockup, he told police a different story.
He said he and his brother were going to purchase $130 of cocaine on Aug. 17 from Edgar and Fernandez, but the cocaine was of poor quality so they refused to pay for it, according to police reports.
The couple became angry and one of the brothers had to jump from the back seat of the car as the couple sped off, the report said.
When police confronted Edgar and Fernandez with his story, they both admitted they lied and had filed a false police report, police said.
Police then asked Fernandez if they could search their apartment.
Fernandez agreed and police found 20 plastic packages containing 29.74 grams of marijuana and a black scale Edgar said belonged to him, police said.
Fernandez was released from custody Friday morning on a $500 bond; her bond was set low so she could take care of the couple's two small children.
Edgar was unable to post a $3,000 bond and was taken to the Kane County jail Friday morning.
Fernandez and Edgar are scheduled to appear in court again on Aug. 29 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
