Wise injury could be serious

The White Sox had two injuries to report on Wednesday.

One is deemed minor - Jim Thome was scratched just before the game with slight soreness in his right leg.

The other might be more serious.

Making a rare start in center field, Dewayne Wise exited in the fifth inning with a strained left adductor.

"Wise, I don't know yet," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "It doesn't sound too good."

Floyd flounders: Sox starter Gavin Floyd picked up the win Wednesday, pitching 6 innings and allowing 3 runs on 6 hits.

Manger Ozzie Guillen wasn't overly impressed.

"He took advantage that we scored a lot of runs, but you pitch 5 innings and you're at 100 pitches, we're looking for better stuff," Guillen said. "Obviously, he won the game and they only scored a couple runs. But in the meanwhile, when you go out there with the lead, we don't want to use the bullpen more that what we used."

The Sox took a 6-0 lead in the first inning and stretched it to 8-0 in the second.

"I kind of caught myself relaxing a little too much," Floyd said. "I tried to stay focused and keep on pitching the game that I usually pitch and try to stay in the game as long as possible. Sometimes you think, 'Whew, I've got a little breathing room,' but you really don't want to make it close. You still have to go out there and pitch because anything can happen in this game."

Looking back: With Wednesday's win over the Mariners, the White Sox (73-53) surpassed their win total from last season.

Manager Ozzie Guillen wasn't taking any bows.

"We can match the 2007 wins with my kids on the field," Guillen said of last year's 72-90 record. "That was not a good season. The only thing I worry about is making sure we win as many games as we can. No matter, regardless of what happens or how we finish, I feel proud of this ballclub. They stick together. We went through a tough time, we went through a lot of injuries to key people. And we are still fighting and still having fun."

Hall hurt? Ozzie Guillen emptied his bench during Wednesday's lopsided win, but catcher A.J. Pierzynski played the entire game.

Backup catcher Toby Hall insists he didn't reinjure his right shoulder while trying to hit teammate Jermaine Dye with a towel of shaving cream Monday night.

"A.J. told me he was fine to catch this morning," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "We will pick a time to rest him later on. Right now, I'm not going to say we're not going to win with Toby. But A.J. was ready to go today and that's why he's there."
