St. Charles man still in jail for wielding gun

Ryan Christopher Zalewa, 21, of 2708 Royal Kings Court in St. Charles remained in the Kane County jail Tuesday afternoon after being charged for a vigilante attempt to reclaim stolen property.

St. Charles police arrested Zalewa Saturday night after receiving a call that two men were driving around the 2800 block of Turnberry Road in a black Chevrolet while pointing a gun out the window.

Once on the scene, police located Zalewa, who told police someone had stolen a GPS and a radar detector from his car, and he was driving around the area to locate a possible suspect.

Police said Zalewa located such a suspect and proceeded to point a laser-sighted pistol at a man, brandishing the weapon in full sight of the victim. No shots were fired, but the victim called the police who took Zalewa into custody.

Zalewa did have a valid firearm owner's identification card. However, that does not give Zalewa permission to take the gun out of his home or business without keeping it locked up. Police confiscated the pistol.

Zalewa is charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated assault. His bond was set at $25,000. Zalewa will make his next court appearance at 9 a.m. Aug. 28.
