Briefs: Protest trial set to begin
Lawyers are expected to begin jury selection today in the trial of two anti-war protesters facing misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges. Naperville resident Sarah Hartfield, 46, and her friend, Jeff Zurawski, 40, of Downers Grove, rode their bikes May 6, 2007, to a pedestrian bridge that spans I-355 near Glen Ellyn and unfurled a banner that read: "Impeach Bush and Cheney - liars." They also displayed an upside-down American flag. They were arrested weeks later after sheriff's police said they followed up on a 911 call from a passing motorist who complained that the demonstration was causing cars to swerve below.
Villa Park DUI patrols
Villa Park police will increase DUI patrols from Monday through Sept. 7. The extra patrols also will be watching for speeding violations and seat belt violations.
Lombard inspects basins
Fourteen stormwater detention basins in Lombard needed corrective action after being inspected by village staff, officials said. Lombard does periodic inspections of basins to ensure they're functional and safe. This year, 66 of 289 basins were inspected. Of the 14 that required corrective action, officials said a portion already have been fixed. Others are slated to be reinspected in coming months.
