Durbin bill unfairly singles out lawyers

Sen. Durbin has promoted legislation which will forgive education loans of lawyers who engage in public service for a few years after graduation.

Traditionally, new lawyers have sought employment in the public sector to gain practical experience and there are more applicants than positions. Most leave and go into private practice after a few years of experience and end up in higher earning brackets as time progresses.

Young men and women go on to higher education to enhance their earning capabilities.

Colleges and graduate schools are expensive, but you can't single out one profession or skill for government grants.

How about social workers, doctors, teachers, nurses, farmers or a good car mechanic?

There are shortages of all these professions in some areas. Forgiving the loans of a select group would be discriminatory and open the doors for forgiveness of other loans.
