Grill sparks fire at Naperville home

Barbecuers beware - grilling is the suspect of a second fire in as many days in DuPage County Monday.

Fire left a Naperville house uninhabitable at 3652 White Eagle Drive at 4:53 p.m. Monday after a propane-fueled grill started on fire, sending fire up the side of the house and into the attic and roof, Naperville Fire Department Batallion Chief Patrick Sleik said.

The fire started when the resident lit a grill to warm it before cooking, then went inside to prepare the food. The grill was positioned close to the house, so when flames hit the propane tank, it started the cedar siding of the home on fire, too, Sleik said.

Fire spread up to the second floor and into the attic.

The fire was under control in about 15-30 minutes after the first unit arrived on the scene, Sleik said, but firefighters worked on the scene until about 7:30 p.m. No one was injured.

"When you put a grill on the back deck, have it on the far side away from home instead of up next to the house," Sleik said.

The fire caused about $150,000 worth of damage. The residents are temporarily staying in a hotel.
