Escaped buffalo shot after wandering onto I-55

BRAIDWOOD -- Illinois State Police say four buffalo escaped from a farm in Braidwood and were shot after they blocked morning traffic.

The buffalo wandered onto Interstate 55, shutting down the highway in both directions from Illinois Route 129 to Route 113 in the Coal City and Braidwood area.

Sgt. Chris Paluch says the buffalo were running back and forth across the highway. Hours later, the owners shot and killed the animals.

The highway has since reopened. Paluch says the owners are still arranging to have the buffalo removed from the highway median.

Braidwood is a city about 60 miles southwest of Chicago.
