Identify butterflies of different colors

Have you noticed butterflies in your garden?

You might want to just sit back and enjoy their graceful flitting, patting yourself on the back because you are growing the right flowers to attract them.

Or maybe you want to find out which species are paying you a visit.

According to Waterford Press, there are 72 familiar species in Illinois.

The company has introduced a laminated Illinois Butterflies & Moths Pocket Naturalist Guide to help you figure out which is which. The guide is one 22-inch-wide sheet that folds up to about 3-by-8 inches.

The best thing about the guide is the colored picture of each species. A few are also represented as caterpillars and pupae (the cases where caterpillars turn into butterflies or moths).

The guide is $5.95 at book stores and online. The company publishes more than 250 different guides, most about nature. They include Chicago Birds, Illinois Birds, Illinois Trees & Wildflowers and Illinois Wildlife.

Don't you love style with low price tags?

My favorite article in the current issue of domino is about the stylish newlywed who moved into her husband's bachelor pad and made over the living room for $2,018.

We're talking about one of those tiny Manhattan apartments where the living room of 265 square feet has to serve for eating, working, lounging and entertaining.

The woman is Leslie Ternes Smith, cofounder of a shoe brand called Hollywould. The difference between the drab "before" snapshot featuring a television and the crisp, yummy "after" is dramatic.

The walls are painted a bright navy blue, and almost everything else is white, including drapes from IKEA and valances covered with the same fabric. Oh, yes, the television is hidden behind a curtain.

There are several other makeovers in the magazine, including a farmhouse whose owner renovated it, but ran out of money before buying furniture. Her friends pitched in with some really great pieces. Yes, they are generous, but she entertains a lot and has three guest rooms.
