Carol Stream crash leaves three injured

Three people were transported to Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield Thursday afternoon after suffering injuries in a two-vehicle crash near County Farm Road and Birchbark Trail in Carol Stream.

One victim was in serious condition several hours after the crash, while another was stable and the third suffered minor injuries and was likely to be released Thursday, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

The accident happened around 2 p.m. just north of the intersection of County Farm and Birchbark, when a BMW and a one-axel commercial truck had an offset collision on their front ends. Carol Stream Police Lt. Jerry O'Brien said the cause of the accident is still under investigation and no one was ticketed Thursday.

Rescue workers had to extricate the BMW driver from the car.

"The passenger door was still able to open, amazingly, but the driver's side sustained a lot of damage," O'Brien said. "Typically in an offset collision, drivers' sides get hit the worst."

Police closed County Farm Road to traffic throughout the afternoon from North Avenue to Lies Road while rescue crews cleaned up the site. Workers from the DuPage County Highway Department filled gouges in the road from the crash.

About a half dozen police cars patrolled the area, where a commercial truck sat with a damaged front hood and its front tires twisted after the collision.

Later Thursday, another car accident was reported at intersection of County Farm Road and North Avenue, just north of the first collision where police were redirecting clogged traffic. O'Brien said DuPage County sheriff's police are investigating the second crash and no further details were available.
