Bigger means better for SummerPalooza
When organizers of Oak Brook Park District's SummerPalooza planned this year's fest, they had one idea in mind: bigger and better.
After launching the inaugural fest last year, almost 500 residents showed up to join children's activities, hear music and play Frisbee golf - even when it seemed like bad weather might spoil it.
"Even when it rained halfway through, we knew this was something that could be successful and become a family-friendly event that everyone loves," said Greg Stephens, the park district's special events supervisor.
So this weekend's SummerPalooza will expand on elements that drew residents last year, including longer pony ride and face painting hours and expanded demonstrations, like wheelchair rugby and Hinsdale Humane Society dogs.
Fest organizers also added new attractions, including a beer and wine garden and a Beatle-theme night Friday that includes a look-alike contest and Beatles tribute bands.
"It's definitely improved and we're excited for this year," Stephens said.
Of course, favorites from last year will still be on the schedule, including children's games, free swimming at the park district and the Frisbee golf tournament.
And while free admission might be a major incentive for residents to come, several contests offer more reasons to check out the fest. The winner of the Beatles costume contest can win an aquatic theme party, adults can win a bags set in the beanbag tournament and softball players can win a $50 Kona grill card in the 16-inch Home Run Derby.
Stephens said organizers hope these improvements will draw an even bigger crowd this year.
"If you have an established event that offers the same things every year, that's great," he said "But we are new and we want to see where we can go and what we can do."
