Bandits seasons ends with literacy pitch

The Chicago Bandits' softball season will end with a pitch for literacy.

The Literacy Connection, along with Gail Borden Public Library and other area libraries, will participate in the Chicago Bandits' Literacy Night at 3:05 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17 at Judson University. The Bandits will play the Rockford Thunder on this last game day of the season.

Softball fans who show their library card on Aug. 17 will save $5 off each $10 admission.

Many activities are planned. The Gail Borden Public Library and other local libraries will celebrate summer reading programs. The Literacy Connection will be promoting its need for volunteer literacy tutors, and also will hold a free drawing for Bandits memorabilia. The Shine FM, a local Christian radio station, also will play.

The Literacy Connection is proud to partner with the Bandits and Gail Borden Public Library to promote literacy in Elgin and neighboring communities. By participating in this event and others like it, The Literacy Connection continues its goal to raise awareness about the need for volunteer tutors to serve those who need English as a Second Language and Basic Reading tutoring services and Family Literacy group instruction.

The Literacy Connection, an affiliate of ProLiteracy America, serves adults and young children in 16 communities in the northwest suburbs: Algonquin, Bartlett, Carpentersville, Cary, Elgin, South Elgin, East Dundee, West Dundee, Gilberts, Hanover Park, Hampshire, Hoffman Estates, Huntley, Lake in the Hills, Streamwood and Schaumburg. Programs include English as a Second Language, Basic Reading, Family Literacy, Workplace Literacy, and Summer Youth Tutoring. The organization currently has over 200 tutors and volunteers, reaching more than 300 students per year with one-on-one tutoring and other programs.
