This week's DVD releases

These DVD'S were released this week:

Smart People

Lawrence Wetherhold (Dennis Quaid) is an arrogant and intelligent English professor at Carnegie Mellon University.

He is also a widower, who lives with his 17-year-old daughter Vanessa (Ellen Page) who tries to keep his home in order. His adopted brother Chuck (Thomas Hayden Church) has moved in, and becomes Lawrence's driver, after he suffers a brain injury and cannot drive.

Chuck is unreliable and leaves his brother stranded. Janet Hartigan (Sarah Jessica Parker), his doctor who attended to him in the ER, gives him a ride and they begin to date. Lawrence keeps getting in his own way, while the quirky characters have their own agendas. The dialogue is good, while Ellen Paige rises above everyone.

Felon

Wade Porter (Stephen Dorff) has a wonderful life, until he accidently kills a home intruder on his lawn. He cannot claim self-defense, and is sentenced to Corcoran prison. The psychotic and sadistic warden (Harold Perrineau) places Ward in maximum security, where serial murderer John Smith (Val Kilmer) becomes his cellmate and mentor. He teaches him about prison life and how to survive. The guards set up the prisoners to fight each other, and place bets on them. Within time, Wade discovers his own humanity, and reconnects with his family. The camera work is terrific.

The Secret

Ben Marris (David Duchovny) is a successful doctor, while his wife Hannah (Lili Taylor) is a photographer. Their daughter Samantha (Olivia Thirlby) is a rebellious straight A student. Hannah and Sam get into a car accident, and are both close to death. Hannah reaches out and takes Sam's hand. She transfers her life into her daughter's, and Sam is actually her mother. The film then deals with the emotional impact of Ben and Sam's life together. After all, she now has all the memories and feelings of her mother. It is a psychological thriller that works.
