Twins topple Yankees to remain on heels of White Sox

Minnesota's Delmon Young hit a 3-run homer for the second straight day as the twins derfeted the visiting New York Yankees 4-2 on Wednesday.

Kevin Slowey (9-8) pitched 6 innings, surrendering 3 hits, 1 run and one walk against a Yankees lineup minus Derek Jeter, who sat out after fouling a ball off his foot Tuesday.

Joe Nathan worked the ninth for his 32nd save as the Twins kept pace with the White Sox, just a half-game back in the AL Central.

The loss was the seventh in 10 games for the Yankees.

Joe Mauer walked in the fourth and Justin Morneau followed with a bouncer to third, but Robinson Cano drew an error for leaving the base to catch Alex Rodriguez's throw.

One out later, Young hit his seventh homer off Darrell Rasner (5-9).

Red Sox 8, Rangers 4: Kevin Youkilis had 3 doubles, and Boston held onto a big lead this time, beating visiting Texas

A day after Youkilis delivered a 3-run homer that gave the Red Sox a 19-17 victory, a win that came after they blew a 10-run cushion before rallying.

Jon Lester (11-4) held the top-hitting team in baseball to 7 hits in 7 innings.

Blue Jays 4, Tigers 3: Vernon Wells hit a grand slam, and David Purcey pitched 6 shutout innings as visiting Toronto beat Detroit.

The Blue Jays have won three straight, all in Detroit, while the Tigers have lost 10 of 13.

Purcey (2-3) gave up 2 singles and 3 walks. He struck out four, and has allowed 1 earned run in 10 innings against the Tigers this season.

Orioles 6, Indians 1: Jeremy Guthrie went seven innings to win his fourth straight start and Baltimore snapped Cleveland's five-game winning streak.

National League

Cardinals 6, Marlins 4: Troy Glaus went 4-for-4, and Jason LaRue hit a go-ahead double in the seventh to lead St. Louis over host Florida.

LaRue hit a two-out, 2-run double with the bases loaded to break a 2-2 tie. Braden Looper (11-9) gave up 1 earned run and 5 hits in 7 innings. He walked one and struck out five.

The Marlins scored twice in the eighth to pull within 5-4. Reliever Chris Perez got Josh Willingham to ground into an inning-ending double play. .

Rockies 6, Diamondbacks 5: Colorado reliever Brian Fuentes issued an intentional walk with two outs in the ninth to load the bases, then retired Adam Dunn on a grounder on a 3-2 pitch to preserve the win over the visiting Diamondbacks.

Mets 12, Nationals 0: Daniel Murphy homered and drove in 3 runs to help visiting New York rout Washington.

Murphy went 3-for-6 and is batting .467 (14-for-30) since being called up by the Mets from Class AAA New Orleans on Aug. 2.
