Grayslake's Summer Days opens Friday

Family friendly fun and a variety of music comes together this weekend as Summer Days and the fifth annual Lake County Music Festival take place along Center Street and Seymour Avenue in downtown Grayslake.

The festival opens at 5 p.m. Friday with Medleys in Motion, presented by DJ Greg Koeppen. Food booths, games and a business fair also will be offered the first night.

The Lake County Music Festival kicks off by featuring Hip Pock!t, Underwater People and Sixteen Candles from 6 p.m. to midnight.

Bingo returns to Summer Days starting Friday night adjacent to the Grayslake Village Hall. Bingo runs from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday and 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday, with celebrity bingo at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Karen Christian Smith, executive director of the Grayslake Chamber of Commerce, said visitors can see a new attraction on Saturday. Courtesy of Grayslake Shell, the Shell/Pennzoil Number 29 car driven by NASCAR racer Kevin Harvick will be displayed from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Also on Saturday, children and teens can play some bingo and see children's entertainer Dave Rudolf perform on the main stage at 12:30 p.m. Local bands Mike and Mal and Tokyo Fish Market will perform at 2 and 4 p.m., respectively. The music will continue at 6:30 p.m. with Betty Soul, followed by 7th Heaven at 8 p.m. Back by popular demand, Mike and Joe close the night at 10 p.m.

Summer Days will feature two parades this year.

At noon Saturday, the annual pet and bike parade will begin on Park Avenue between Slusser and Seymour streets.

Then, the Summer Days parade will kick off at noon Sunday. The parade will begin at the Grayslake Middle School, travel south on Library Lane to Center Street, west to Lake Street and then north to Grayslake Central High School.

Featuring the theme "Grayslake Goes to The Olympics", the parade will feature 80 participants including the Dixie Marchers, Grayslake Central and Grayslake North marching bands, local shriners groups, community marchers and floats, business floats, dancers and animals.

In addition to food and games, the Dixie Marchers will entertain at the festival site following the parade. Then come see The Scotch Lads at 1 p.m., followed by the Spotlight Company of Dance Connection at 2:30 p.m.

The festival also includes sidewalk sales offered by downtown businesses and an open house hosted by the Grayslake Historical Society from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.
