Hoffman Estates shooting likely not random, police say
Hoffman Estates police say a drive-by shooting Tuesday afternoon was not random.
Their investigation hadn't yielded a possible motive - or an arrest - as of late Tuesday, but Hoffman Estates police Lt. Rich Russo said authorities believe the gunman had targeted the male victim.
He was shot twice, once in the right hip and once in the left leg, authorities said, and was taken to St. Alexius Medical Center. His condition was unknown. The incident happened around 2:40 p.m. as the man walked out of a townhouse on the 1700 block of Queensbury Circle. It was unclear if the victim lives at that address.
A silver car, possibly a Honda, passed by with a man pointing a gun out the window, police said. The car was traveling west on Queensbury, and three or four bullets were fired, Russo said. A neighbor then called police after hearing gunshots, Russo added.
Officers remained at the scene for several hours after the shooting, marking evidence and at one point appearing to use a metal detector.
Several residents of the area said they'd been unaware of the shooting, though 12-year-old Joselyne Salas, who lives in a nearby townhouse, said she heard four loud shots and then a car speed away. Frightened, she and her aunt stayed inside and did not investigate.
After the shooting, Russo said the victim made his way to Manchester Boulevard a few hundred feet away. He was conscious and able to speak with police, Russo said.
Police are looking for a small silver car with damage to the rear on the left side. Anyone with potential leads is asked to call police at (847) 882-1818.
