Evanston latest suburb to repeal gun ban
The city of Evanston has become the latest to react to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling affirming the right to gun ownership by repealing its handgun ban.
Members of the Evanston City Council said Tuesday they voted to change the law to avoid the expense of a lawsuit filed against the city by the National Rifle Association.
The Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, ruled in June that individuals have a right to own guns and keep them in their homes for self-defense.
The NRA sued the city of Chicago and the suburbs of Morton Grove, Evanston and Oak Park to overturn gun bans. Last month, Morton Grove modified its gun ban, keeping in place prohibitions on such weapons as automatic rifles and grenades.
Evanston voted down an amendment requiring safety locks on handguns.
