Don't try those Olympic dives at your local pool
Olympic diving is thrilling to watch, but pediatricians are bracing for more ER visits if kids try to copy those gold-medal moves at the neighborhood pool.
The first national study conducted on diving injuries, reported in the journal Pediatrics, found:
• About 6,500 children are treated in the ER for diving-related injuries each year.
• Youngsters ages 10 to 14 are at greatest risk, and boys are twice as likely to be taken to the hospital as girls.
• Most kids are hurt while doing flips or back flips off the diving board.
• Eight out of 10 injuries happen from a dive height of about 3 feet or less.
If your kids want to do flips, enroll them in a diving program taught by a qualified instructor first, researchers advise. Never allow a child to dive from the pool edge, always check the water depth and only dive if there's a life guard on duty.
Pass the oregano:
Blueberries are widely touted for their antioxidant content, but they're pikers compared with herbs and spices.
Researchers at the University of Georgia tested 24 common herbs and spices and found high levels of antioxidant rich compounds known as phenols that protect against tissue damage and inflammation. Phenol levels by dry weight were 30 percent for cloves, 18 percent for cinnamon, 8 percent for oregano and 5 percent for blueberries.
"If you set up a good herb and spice cabinet and season your food liberally, you could double or even triple the medicinal value of your meal without increasing the caloric content," said study co-author Diane Hartle, an associate professor of pharmacy.
That's not a vacation:
Despite all the health benefits associated with vacation, most senior executives and managers don't really get away. More than half make themselves available to people back at the office on a daily basis, according to a study by NFI Research.
While on "vacation," 74 percent of business leaders check their e-mail, 57 percent use a computer and 54 percent are tethered to their PDAs.
No, you can't toss your spouse's BlackBerry in the ocean. But remind him or her that vacations are the time to refresh and recharge - and that can help when tackling business challenges after the trip.
