Briefs: Pet adoption event

Since opening its Arlington Heights homeless animal shelter six weeks ago, The Buddy Foundation has no shortage of pets available for adoption. So the shelter at 65 W. Seegers Road will be open for adoption from 10 a.m. to midnight today and Saturday. Refreshments and entertainment will be provided. Call (847) 290-5806.

No one hurt in fire

No one was hurt in an apartment fire Thursday night in Schamburg, police said. The 8 p.m. blaze on the 1100 block of Tall Timbers Road may have been caused by an unattended candle. One apartment in the eight-unit building was badly damaged; the others suffered smoke damage.

Renew your license

A secretary of state's mobile driver services super senior day will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. today at the Buffalo Grove Park District's Alcott Center, 530 Bernard Drive. No preregistration will be taken. A rules-of-the-road review class will begin at 9:30 a.m., and vision screenings will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The event will offer duplicate licenses, corrected licenses, renewal, ID cards and renewal stickers. Individuals ages 74 and within one year of the expiration date of their licenses may renew them. Those who need a road test must go through a full-service facility. For more information, call (217) 782-7044. Those interested should bring a Social Security card and two forms of ID that provide name, date of birth, residency and signature.

Youth sports tryouts held

Several tryouts for youth sports teams are this weekend. Illinois Crush travel baseball will hold tryouts for the 2009 14 and under team at 5 p.m. Saturday at McKenzie Field in Rolling Meadows. Palatine eatery closes

A popular Palatine restaurant recently closed its doors. Marlowe's, at Euclid and Quentin roads, served New American cuisine since the mid-1990s. A former employee told the Daily Herald that the restaurant was profitable, but that landlord intends to open a sports bar in its place. Palatine's assistant village manager said there's no official word on a future tenant. Owner Warren Schew couldn't be reached.

Beard-trimming advice given

You can generate $10 contributions to the YMCA by bringing razors, scissors or out-of-date beard trimmers to the mobile barber shop that will be at 101 W. Oakton St. in Des Plaines from 2 to 7 p.m. today. Stylists will offer free trims and trimming tips as part of a promotional charity event by Wahl Clipper Corp., whose 38-foot mobile barber shop is looking around the country for the best beard, mustache and goatee.
