Police: Seat belt saved girl's life in Elgin

A teenage girl flipped her car in Elgin on Wednesday afternoon but escaped with minor injuries, authorities said.

Elgin Fire Department Batallion Chief Tim Michaels credited the girl's seat belt for preventing serious injuries.

The accident happened about 3 p.m. on Bowes Road at Santa Fe Trail. The unidentified girl, who said she was a Burlington Central High School student, lost control of the vehicle and drove off the road, Michaels said. The car then flipped and came to rest on its roof in a wooded area, he said. She was taken by ambulance to Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin.
