Horse goes for stroll on I-94
Jaywalking charges won't be filed against a horse that went for a stroll on the Tri-State Tollway near Wadsworth on Wednesday.
The horse, a brown and red mare wearing an English saddle, was spotted by motorists shortly before 8:30 a.m. south of Route 173, said Master Sgt. Frank Gutierrez of the Illinois State Police.
The animal, which had escaped from a nearby farm, was walking on the grass on the east side of the southbound lanes, Gutierrez said.
Four motorists stopped to protect the horse, police said. Because the road there doesn't have a shoulder, one lane was temporarily blocked, Gutierrez said.
Eventually the horse's rider showed up with a trailer and took the animal away, police said. It was not injured.
Although unusual, horses have occasionally appeared on suburban highways. Gutierrez recalled a similar incident near Hampshire on what is now the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway.
