Gail Borden Library notes
Local athletes inducted in the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame will share how they "got in the game" with summer readers at Gail Borden Library's finale for the 2008 summer reading program, "Get in the Game, Read!" The program will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 in the library's community rooms.
Guest athletes will include Lisa (Stack) Pawlak, champion bowler at Larkin High School and Central Missouri University; Amy Kovacs-Young, award-winning gymnast at Larkin High School and Southeastern Missouri State University; Derrick Mayes, record-breaking basketball standout at Elgin High School and Illinois State University; Katy (Carter) Potts, softball player of the year at Larkin High School and 4-year letter winner at DePaul University; Debbie Leganski, a second Team NCAA All-American in volleyball and track at Larkin High School and a competitor in both sports at Judson University; and Cameron Reed, team captain and varsity wrestler at Larkin High School and at Trinity College in Connecticut.
Ron Lange, President of the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame, will introduce the athletes, who will talk about life lessons learned from participating in sports and how reading has helped them reach their goals.
Aspiring athletes, fans and young readers will have the opportunity to ask each athlete questions.
Prize drawings will be held and refreshments served.
