Carpentersville man killed in hit-and-run
A Carpentersville man was killed early Wednesday when he was hit by a vehicle as he walked along Route 72 in East Dundee.
Patrick A. Simpson, 27, was walking in the middle of the right lane on eastbound Route 72, just west of Rock Road, when he was hit at 12:52 a.m., witnesses told police.
The driver of the vehicle that hit Simpson fled the scene and several witnesses were unable to identify the vehicle, police said.
Simpson was taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin with a severe head injury and was pronounced dead at 1:46 a.m., police said.
While investigating, officers received a tip that the possible driver of the vehicle had reported his involvement to a friend in Algonquin, police said.
When officers arrived at the Algonquin residence, they found a 27-year-old Gilberts man and a 1998 Jeep Cherokee. Police said the driver's statements, witness statements and damage to the vehicle were consistent with the accident.
The name of the driver is being withheld pending further investigation and possible traffic or criminal charges by the Kane County State's Attorney's Office, police said.
An autopsy is scheduled for today.
Police ask witnesses to contact East Dundee Police Detective Michael Seyller at (847)428-4034.
