Yankees' Chamberlain exits early with injury
First, the New York Yankees lost Joba Chamberlain to a shoulder injury. Then, they lost the game.
Marlon Byrd hit a game-winning grand slam with two outs in the ninth inning, and the Texas Rangers snapped a 10-game home losing streak to New York with a 9-5 victory Monday night.
Already missing No. 1 starter Chien-Ming Wang and right-hander Phil Hughes from a top-heavy rotation, the Yankees received more bad news when Chamberlain exited with a stiff right shoulder in the fifth.
He'll return to New York today for tests, and manager Joe Girardi said the 22-year-old right-hander probably will miss a turn in the rotation. Anything more than that would be a major blow to the injury-depleted Yankees, who are 2 games behind Boston for the AL wild-card lead.
"He has a little stiffness. We believe it's muscular," Girardi said. "We'll see what the tests reveal. I don't think it's serious. I don't think he'll be shut down a long time."
But the Yankees are likely to be cautious with the hard-throwing Chamberlain - even in a tight playoff race. He said he's never had a similar problem in his shoulder.
"My strength was fine. My velocity was fine," Chamberlain said. "We'll have tests just so we can rule out everything. It kind of grabbed and it was a little bit tighter in the fifth inning."
After the game, Girardi also revealed that star closer Mariano Rivera was unavailable for the second consecutive game because of back spasms.
"We were a little short-handed," the manager said. "He said he felt OK, but I've got to hear that he feels great."
Girardi said he expects Rivera will be ready to pitch tonight.
Indians 5, Rays 2: Cliff Lee tied the major-league lead with his 15th win, and visiting Cleveland stayed unbeaten against AL East-leading Tampa Bay this season. Lee (15-2) went 7 innings, giving up 2 runs and 8 hits. The left-hander is 9-2 in 13 road starts. Tampa Bay's five-game winning streak ended. The Rays began the day 2 games ahead of Boston in the AL East.
Blue Jays 6, Athletics 1: Roy Halladay (13-8) pitched 8 strong innings, and host Toronto handed Oakland its season-high seventh straight loss. Oakland is a major-league-worst 2-14 since the all-star break and 9-23 since June 28. Halladay had retired eight in a row and 16 of 18 overall when Bobby Crosby ended his shutout bid with a homer to left in the eighth. It was Crosby's fifth of the year. Halladay gave up 4 hits, walked one and struck out eight.

Mariners 11, Twins 6: Raul Ibanez had a grand slam and 6 RBI - all in a wild seventh inning - and host Seattle staged its biggest comeback of a lost season to stun AL Central-leading Minnesota. Twins starter Glen Perkins cruised into the sixth with a 6-0 lead and was still comfortably up 6-1 with one out in the seventh. Seattle looked set to tie its season low of 28 games under .500 until Ibanez triggered a 10-run inning.
Angels 6, Orioles 5: Chone Figgins drew a bases-loaded walk from all-star closer George Sherrill with two outs in the ninth inning after Francisco Rodriguez blew a 4-run lead, and host Los Angeles beat Baltimore.

Aaron Cook (14-7) gave up 7 runs - 4 earned - in 5 innings and lost for the first time since July 6.
