Suburban man struck, killed by car hours after DUI arrest

Hours after he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, a 33-year-old Montgomery man was struck and killed by a car as he walked across busy Route 38 Saturday night, police said.

Marcel Lizak, of the 3000 block of Iron Leige Lane, was attempting to cross Route 38 near LaFox Road when he was struck by a Honda CRV at about 11:18 p.m. Saturday, bouncing off its windshield before hitting the ground, said Campton Hills Police Chief Gregory Anderson.

Lizak was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where he was pronounced dead.

The DuPage County Coroner could not be reached Sunday.

Lizak had been arrested by the Campton Hills Police Department and charged with DUI at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday, police said. He was stopped after an officer saw him driving erratically on Crawford Road, reports said.

Lizak, who Anderson says refused a breath test, posted $100 bond, surrendered his driver's license, and was released from custody at 8:24 p.m.

He was still intoxicated when he left the police station roughly an hour after he entered it, Anderson said.

"You do not sober up in an hour, generally," Anderson said, adding it is illegal to detain an inmate once he or she posts bond.

Anderson said Lizak continued drinking at a Campton Hills bar after his release.

During the police probe, a local bartender confirmed that he served alcohol to Lizak at a bar Anderson declined to name.

Police also are looking into whether Lizak visited other bars before his death, Anderson said.

The Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team is assisting the Campton Hills police in the crash investigation.

On Sunday, the person driving the SUV that struck Lizak had not been arrested or charged with anything, Anderson said.

Funeral arrangements were not available Sunday.
