We speak American here
In reply to Paula Coughlan's letter in the July 28 Fencepost: The United States does not have an official language. An amendment has been proposed to the Constitution, but it has never been passed. Several states have adopted English as their official language and Illinois declared "American" would be their official language in 1923. Many Illinois statutes refer to the "American language," however, the official language of Illinois is now English.
